Since the cultivation of genetically modified plants started, worldwide, the crop with the largest cultivated area has been, annually, soy, followed by maize, cotton and rapeseed. The global area planted with genetically modified crops reported in 2017 was 189.8 million hectares, distributed among 24 countries, corresponding to an increase of 2.5% compared to 2016.
